About Stefanie

I am a therapist, writer, and researcher who lives and works on unceded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories. I am a Jewish, third generation settler of Russian/Polish ancestry.
My passions emerge from the intersections: of psychology (the study of the soul) and ecology (the study of nature); of philosophy and religion; of the personal and the political. After graduating with a MA in Liberal Studies from The New School for Social Research in New York City, I worked as the Senior Editor of Adbusters: Journal of the Mental Environment for several years before I traded in armchair activism for anti-oppressive psychotherapy (or, what tries to be). |
At Adler University, I completed original qualitative research on sexual desire, which was published in the journal of Sexual and Relationship Therapy. I have presented on topics related to sexuality at City University of New York's conference, "Desire; From Eros to Eroticism," and at The Guelph Sexuality Conference. I am also an Adjunct Instructor at Adler University where I help graduate students hone their counselling skills.
I am endlessly fascinated by the way different beliefs about so-called 'human nature' impact the way we relate to one another and the world around us.
I channel all of my curiosity and fervor into my writing, and most of all, into my work with people who are seeking to create change in themselves, in their relationships, and communities. Despite all this gravitas, those who know me best know me as silly and whimsical (for better or for worse). For fun, I like to dance, and frolic in the forest with my dog, Echo, as much as possible.
